RAIN BIRD HISTORY
Rain Bird Pawn & Trading is a wholesale and retail Indian Arts and Crafts business. It is located
in Gallup, New Mexico in the "Heart of Indian Country." Gallup is surrounded by five Indian Reservations -- Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, Laguna and Acoma.
Therefore, we are able to handle a wide array of quality Indian Arts & Crafts that have been purchased directly from the Indian Craftsman. These craftsmen are today's leading Native American silversmiths and artists. Each have an eye for creating heirloom-quality jewelry and one-of-a-kind collectibles that is appealing to a broad range of collectors who appreciate the fine craftmenship.
Rain Bird Pawn & Trading Co. is operated by second and third generation Oneidas. The trading business is not new to the family since Genus Alexander Baird, father and grandfather, was engaged in the trading business. Genus moved to the Ganado and Chinli area on the Navajo reservation from Pennsylvania in 1913 at the age of six. He spoke fluent Navajo and became familiar with the trading business while growing up and working with his stepfather, he later owned Trading Posts at Sawmill, Arizona, and Ft. Defiance, Arizona.
The family also owns Gallup Lumber & Supply -- both are located in the same building which enables our Indian neighbors to take advantage of this service.
